Infrared window for microscopic FTIR analysis – KBr
Optical windows made of Potassium bromide (KBr) are mostly used in Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and also in other spectroscopic applications. Potassium Bromide (KBr) Windows are ideal for FTIR spectroscopy. The KBr windows for FTIR are made from a high-purity KBr crystals and have great optical properties, including high transmission in the infrared region. KBr has a slightly more extensive spectral range than Sodium Chloride (NaCl) and has excellent transmission from 250nm – 26μm.
Potassium Bromide (KBr) is a crystalline compound of potassium and bromide with a rock-salt type structure. It is used in optical applications in the UV, Visible, MWIR, and LWIR waveband regions. KBr has a melting point of 730°C and must be used in a moisture-free environment as the polished surfaces degrade in a moist atmosphere.
Potassium Bromide (KBr) Windows provide good resistance to mechanical shock, can be easily cleaved, and can be used in temperatures up to 300°C. KBr has a density of 2.75g/cm3 and a Knoop Hardness of 7.0.

Infrared window for microscopic FTIR analysis – KBr
Similar products in top demand today are other materials and sample holders that serve a similar purpose, often with different properties that make them better suited for specific applications, such as liquid samples, corrosive materials, or different spectral ranges.
1. Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) Windows
ZnSe is a top-demand material because it is not hygroscopic, meaning it is not affected by moisture like KBr. It’s a common window material for both transmission and ATR (Attenuated Total Reflectance) accessories, which are used to analyze liquid and solid samples without extensive preparation.

4. Sodium Chloride (NaCl) Windows
Like KBr, NaCl is a salt that is highly transparent to IR light and is used for transmission cells. It is slightly more resistant to moisture than KBr, making it a viable alternative for many non-aqueous liquid samples.
5. Liquid Transmission Cells
These are not a material but an integrated product used to analyze liquid samples. They are in high demand for their ease of use and are typically made with windows from one of the materials above, like ZnSe or KBr, and spacers to control the path length.
6. Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) Accessories
An ATR accessory is a complete sampling technique. Instead of transmitting light through the sample, it reflects light off a crystal (e.g., diamond, ZnSe) that is in contact with the sample. This technology is in top demand because it eliminates the need for extensive sample preparation and can be used on a wide range of samples.
7. Diffuse Reflectance Accessories (DRIFTS)
This accessory is designed for analyzing solid powdered samples. It works by collecting and focusing the IR light that is scattered off the sample surface. It is in top demand as a rapid, non-destructive method for analyzing powders without the need to press a KBr pellet.
8. Gas Cells
Gas cells are specialized accessories used to measure the IR spectrum of gaseous samples. They are in high demand in environmental monitoring and industrial process control and can be made with various windows, including KBr, ZnSe, or CaF2.
9. Silicon (Si) and Germanium (Ge) Windows
Silicon and Germanium are semiconductor materials that are opaque in the visible but transparent in the mid-IR range. They are in demand for high-power laser systems and thermal imaging, where their high refractive index is a key advantage, especially in imaging applications.
10. KBr Pellet Presses
This is a tool directly related to the KBr window, but is a standalone product. A pellet press is a hydraulic or manual press used to create the uniform, transparent pellets from a mixture of KBr powder and a solid sample. It is a fundamental tool for any lab using the KBr pellet method for FTIR.
